L'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) a condamné en appel, lundi 2 juin 2008, les subventions américaines au coton, ouvrant la voie à une possible demande de sanctions par le Brésil. Il est ainsi mis un point final à une controverse qui opposait le Brésil aux Etats-Unis depuis 2005. L'organe d'appel de l'OMC, la plus haute instance du système de règlement des différends de l'OMC, a jugé que les Etats-Unis ont échoué à supprimer leurs subventions "illégales" aux producteurs de coton en conformité avec son ancien verdict. En effet, les mesures prises par le gouvernement américain, incluant l'élimination d'un programme destiné à subventionner les acheteurs du coton américain, ainsi que l'application d'ajustements administratifs sur ses programmes de crédit d'assurance en faveur des exportateurs, ont été considérées toutes comme "insuffisantes" par les autorités brésiliennes.
