Vendredi 22 juin 2007, la loi en faveur du protocole de Kyoto est entrée en vigueur au Canada. Le protocole de Kyoto a été ouvert à ratification le 16 mars 1998, et est entré en vigueur en février 2005. Il propose un calendrier de réduction des émissions des 6 gaz à effet de serre qui sont considérés comme la cause principale du réchauffement climatique des cinquante dernières années. Pour autant, le gouvernement conservateur canadien a affirmé qu'elle ne le forçait pas à atteindre ses cibles de réduction de CO2.
