The French demographic situation is one of both continuity and change. Examining developments in 2007, Gilles Pison draws our attention to three key trends: the remarkable increase in life expectancy since 2003, year of the deadly summer heat wave, the growing popularity of heterosexual civil partnerships (PACS), and the rising proportion of babies born outside marriage, who now account for more than half of all births.

The French population is still growing. Three-quarters of this increase is due to the surplus of births over deaths, and one-quarter to net migration, i.e. the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants. Fertility is still among the highest in Europe and life expectancy has risen again with respect to 2004. The overseas départements and regions account for 3% of the total population, but have little impact on overall fertility or life expectancy.

Though the population of France is ageing, there is no threat of "demographic decline" on the horizon. In fact, the INSEE projections for 2050 foresee a substantial population increase over the coming decades. While previous projections predicted a future downtrend, they now see stabilization or slow growth as the most likely long-term scenario. Laurent Toulemon and Isabelle Robert-Bobée examine the various scenarios envisaged and explain the reasons for this new prognosis.

Sub-Saharan immigration to France often attracts media attention. But what is the true scale of the phenomenon? Analysing a range of statistical sources, David Lessault and Cris Beauchemin show that although the number of sub-Saharan immigrants has risen sharply in recent decades, they still represent a very small share of total immigration to France and Europe, both in terms of annual arrivals (flows) and immigrant populations (stocks).

In France, manual workers have a shorter life expectancy than people in highly qualified occupations. Does a shorter life mean fewer years of ill health? Using data from the French health survey of 2003, Emmanuelle Cambois, Caroline Laborde and Jean-Marie Robine show that this is not the case. Not only do manual workers have a shorter length of life, but they also spend more years with disability.
